Background on Ambassador Campbell’s Speech: The fifth round of NAFTA re-negotiations wrapped up recently in Mexico City and it is no secret that the U.S. put some tough America-first demands on the table, including auto parts and public works contracts. With round six scheduled for Montreal in the new year, negotiators must make the most of time between rounds to dive more deeply into details and consult with stakeholders.
• Status of the NAFTA trade talks and update regarding the new TPP initiative.
• What are the sticking points?
• Canada - Japan business relationship.
Ambassador Campbell is the Senior Strategy Advisor at DLA Piper LLP and is also currently the Senior Co-Chair of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council. In the latter capacity, he recently attended the APEC Ministerial meetings in Danang, Vietnam, where the new TPP initiative was agreed to by numerous Asia Pacific countries. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Ambassador Campbell had a distinguished career with Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. As Canada’s Ambassador to Japan, he oversaw significant development in Canada’s economic and trade relationship with Japan, and as Deputy Minister of International Trade, he supervised the negotiation of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
